Israel carried out airstrikes near the Syrian city of Aleppo early Monday, killing several people including an Iranian military advisor, according to state media from Syria and Iran.
At the moment, Israel has not acknowledged the attacks.
This is the first attack that claimed the life of an Iranian official since the April 1 bombing at the Iranian consulate in the Syrian capital of Damascus, where seven people, including two Iranian generals and a member of the Lebanese militia group Hezbollah, were killed. The attack triggered Iran’s first direct military strike against Israel, raising fears of a regional war.
The state-run Syrian news agency SANA did not provide a number of victims from the attacks, which took place near the southeastern boundary of Aleppo.
“The aggression resulted in a number of martyrs and some material losses,” SANA said.
In Iran, the semi-official news agency Tasnim, which is considered close to the Revolutionary Guard of Iran, reported that Iranian military advisor Saeed Abyar died in the Israeli attack on Aleppo. No further details were provided.
Iran has deployed military advisors in Syria since the country’s civil war erupted in March 2011 in support of Syrian President Bashar Assad.
Israel does not usually acknowledge operations in Syria
Syria and Israel have been at war since the establishment of Israel in 1948. Syrian President Bashar Assad has received support from Iran during the years of war in his country, and past Israeli attacks have targeted Iranian positions and equipment.
These events are separate from the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Israel has also targeted objectives in Lebanon, while Hezbollah continues its cross-border fire in the country.
