Exploring the collection of the newspaper La Nación from 1954, we came across a brief article that caught our attention.
The unsigned note, dated in San Pedro de Macorís, reveals an incident that occurred on May 24, 1954 involving the Cuban Fermín Guerra who was the manager of the Estrellas Orientales.
According to the note, the team from Petromacorisano was going through a tough time in the first round and Guerra, to soften the blow, went to the "BByVT" restaurant where Otilio Guerrero, a passionate fan, in the Tano Martino style, began insulting him. The Cuban, who had a bad temper, ended up in a physical altercation, getting injured in an arm that required several stitches. Guerra left the oriental team the next day.
The Estrellas won the championship under the leadership of another Cuban: Ramón –El Profesor- Bragaña, to close the curtains on the summer tournaments.
The fight of Guerra, even though he was no longer managing, stirred up the bats of the orientals.

WAS THE WORK OF GRILLO B: Esteemed colleague Juan Vené, in his baseball stories about Venezuela, mentions that Andrés Julio Báez (Grillo A) had pitched a 20-inning game when in reality, it was his brother, Grillo B.
Vené’s account states: "On this date, June 5, 1938, one of the longest games in innings and time in baseball history took place. Pastora defeated Gavilanes in Maracaibo, 1-0, in 20 innings that lasted six hours and 20 minutes. Two pitchers at bat, were the authors of the game’s only run. In the bottom of the 20th inning, the Dominican Andrés Julio Báez (Grillo A), who had pitched the entire game, hit a line drive single to right field, and then Domingo (El Taciturno) Barboza hit a line drive, this time between left field and center field, which allowed him to reach second base and cross home plate with the spikes that marked the end of the game. On the other side, for Gavilanes, there was also only one pitcher all afternoon, the Cuban from Belén, Lázaro Salazar. It was a championship game."
The Báez brothers were a trilogy known as the Crickets.
Pedro Báez (Grillo A), third baseman; Andrés Julio Báez (Grillo B), pitcher; and Luis Domingo Báez (Grillo C), outfielder and shortstop.
