Una exposición de James Cameron muestra el retrato de Rose y Avatar

31 years have passed, but for the first time the mythical portrait of Rose (Kate Winslet in 'Titanic') can be seen by the public in an "unprecedented" exhibition at the French Cinematheque that reviews the work of filmmaker James Cameron.

’The Art of James Cameron', as the exhibition is called, showcases 300 works, 280 of them original and a significant part never before exhibited, including designs, paintings, clothing, photographs, and 3D elements. It also offers interactive experiences and unfinished projects.

"There have been exhibitions in Asia on James Cameron’s expeditions, who is a great maritime explorer […], but this is the first exhibition in the world focused on Cameron the draftsman, illustrator, artist," explained Matthieu Orléan, one of the two curators of the exhibition.

Of course, the iconic portrait that a young Leonardo DiCaprio, 23, portraying Jack Dawson, made of Rose is also featured. The reality, however, is that it was Cameron himself who made that drawing.

"There is a very famous shot in which we see what we think is Jack’s hand drawing Rose, who is lying in her cabin with the famous jewel, and in reality, this hand is James Cameron’s," Orléan revealed. "It is an absolutely exceptional and rare case of impregnation, of hybridization between cinema and drawings," he added.

The drawings, in fact, are the cornerstone of the artist’s life and work. Everything starts there. In fact, sketches from when he was just 19 finally ended up becoming films, decades later. Avatar or Terminator are examples of this.

The anticipation was high this Wednesday. The organizers had announced the presence of the Canadian, a legend. And the public responded. Upon entering the conference room of the Cinematheque, located in the Bercy neighborhood, people jumped out of their seats and applauded the filmmaker and screenwriter.

He explained that when evaluating art in cinema, one must "see the evolution of a filmmaker as an artist because, ultimately, my ultimate goal was to paint with light on the big screen."

Impossible worlds, dreams brought to the screen

Along that path, Cameron has created impossible worlds. Apocalyptic at times, dreamlike at others. "Sometimes I have a fairly clear image, but I also like there to be a lot of collaboration and for people to contribute more ideas," he explained.

At times, dreams come true, acknowledged the filmmaker. "I love dreams and even nightmares, because I get many good ideas for stories from them. I like the process of dreaming, which is nothing more than the mind amusing itself and setting the narrative engine in motion," he recounted.

Nevertheless, the artist clarified that making films is not as simple as translating dreams into reality, but after a dream experience, there is then a conscious and strenuous work.

Regarding the debate on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in cinema, Cameron expressed reluctance to use it to create sequences or images without any human intervention in their creation.

"I can imagine that being a possibility (the use of AI), but we would never use it to create the finished image, because that depends on the actors and what they do, on what their process is," he opined.

However, he did acknowledge the use of generative AI in his works, as was the case with Avatar.

  • When we had to create a forest, we generated models of some of the plants in the foreground as examples, but then, in real terms, we almost grew the forest following ecological rules using principles and machine learning algorithms," he explained.

The exhibition, available until January 5, 2025, is a collaboration between the French institution and the Avatar Alliance Foundation, which is responsible for preserving Cameron’s work as well as taking action against climate change, among other initiatives.
