LOS ÁNGELES (AP) — Shohei Ohtani hit his first homerun with the Dodgers, a solo shot in the seventh inning, and Los Angeles defeated the San Francisco Gigantes 5-4 on Wednesday, completing a sweep in the three-game series.
In his ninth game with his new team, Ohtani found a 93.2 mph sinker offered by left-hander Taylor Rogers in the upper part of the strike zone. The hit placed the ball in the pavilion, between right field and center field.
The ball flew off the bat of the Japanese star at 105.6 mph and landed 430 feet from home plate. A fan retrieved it.
The homerun came in the seventh inning and on Ohtani’s 41st at-bat with the Dodgers.
Twice named the Most Valuable Player, Ohtani left the Los Angeles Angels at the end of the previous season as a free agent. He signed with the Dodgers for 10 years and a record amount of 700 million dollars.
Ohtani’s 172nd homerun in the majors gave the Dodgers a 5-3 lead. The Asian player, who also pitches, will only bat this year after undergoing elbow surgery in September.
He started the day in a slump, going 3-for-20. He also hit a single and scored in the second inning.
He has a batting average of .270 with four RBIs.
The win went to Tyler Glasnow (2-0) and the loss to Kyle Harrison (1-1).
